Specialty Windows
Many homes are improved by the visual appeal of a specialty window. That might be an odd shape, like an oval or an arch, or it might be a skylight. At Altra Home Décor here in Phoenix, though, we know that many of our customers sometimes struggle trying to figure out how to best cover those specialty windows. Luckily, no matter your window, Hunter Douglas more than likely has a solution. Today, we’ll talk about some of your options for treating skylights. Read on for some tips, and be sure to contact one of our representatives for details about your exact situation.
Window Treatments for Skylights
A skylight can bring in lots of natural light and add dimension to the space. However, that direct overhead sunlight can be a bit harsh and create glare in the room and can create splotches of UV ray damage on the flooring and furniture. And, just like regular windows, skylights can lose a good amount of your indoor air. Luckily, by using the right window treatment, you can enjoy the benefits of your skylight while reducing the drawbacks. You just need to follow a few key principles.
Consider the Needs of the Space
Choose the right type of light-blocking you need based on the needs of the room. In your bedroom, you’ll most likely want room-darkening or blackout fabric. However, in a room where you want good natural light, like a kitchen, sunroom, or dining room, you’ll want a more light-diffusing solution.
Energy Bills
Adding the right treatment on your skylight can help insulate the window, keeping the outside air out and the inside air in. For the best in energy efficiency for your skylight, consider cellular shades such as Duette® Honeycomb Shades.
Preserving Flooring and Furniture
UV rays can wreak havoc on floors, furniture, cabinets, and artwork. Even if you know you want to have as much natural light as possible through your skylight, be sure to use a treatment that will help reduce the damage from UV rays. To block UV rays while still getting some light in the room, check out Somner® Custom Vertical Blinds or Vertical Solutions® Vertical Blinds, which each offer 75% UV ray protection.
Operating Systems
Skylights are, of course, generally out of easy reach. For your skylight operating system, you can choose from the Skylift™ or Simplicity™ system (which operate manually, often with a crank or a telescoping pole) or PowerView® Motorization (which lets you operate your treatment remotely, even if you’re halfway around the world).
