Duette Cellular Shades
Duette® Honeycomb Shades

No matter the window in your home, we always advise to have some sort of window covering, for a variety of reasons, including energy efficiency, UV protection, privacy and light control, and more. Yet at Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we’ve had several customers ask about how to handle the elusive scullery. If you’re lucky enough to have this handy room, you might want some ideas on how to treat any window in it. Read on, and be sure to contact one of our consultants for specifics on your situation.

What Are Sculleries?

Although they’re from “back in the day,” sculleries are making a comeback in modern builds, and are even being requested in remodels. These great rooms offer numerous advantages, and, especially given how much more frequently many homeowners cook at home, they’re being relied on a great deal. They provide extra storage for pots and pans and small appliances, they open up new counters for food prep and another sink for cleanup, they’re a great way to hide kitchen mess during the height of entertaining, and they generally hide the messiness of daily life to give the kitchen the pristine look many homeowners crave.

Treating Scullery Windows

Not all sculleries are designed with windows, but if yours is (or if you’re able to create one in your renovation), you should consider how best to cover it. Even if the scullery isn’t a place you’ll show many guests, you will want to feel comfortable being in it, so everything from aesthetics to functionality will be important.

  • Energy efficiency. A large percentage of indoor air can escape through an untreated window, so you might find insulation a high-value factor. Duette® Honeycomb Shades can trap air at the windows, ensuring that what’s inside stays inside and what’s outside stays out. Plus, they provide excellent light and privacy control, sound absorption, and style.
  • Modern style. Roman shades lend a touch of class and elegance to any space, combining the softness of drapery with crisp, clean folds. Especially in sculleries that are all white, Vignette® Modern Roman Shades add a hint of pizzazz through color, pattern, and texture.
  • Softening light. Sheers can soften light entering the space and leave the room with a welcoming glow. Silhouette® Sheer Shades are designed with the Signature S-Vane™ that appears to be floating between two sheers. Pirouette® Sheer Shades offer beautifully contoured fabric vanes attached to a sheer backing.
  • Easy maintenance. For sculleries with high moisture, a good choice would be aluminum or faux wood blinds, such as Hunter Douglas Everwood® Alternative wood Blinds or Modern Precious® Aluminum Blinds. They never go out of style, can be cleaned fairly easily, and are a good value.
  • Flexibility. If you want the best of all worlds, consider Hunter Douglas shades that are offered with top-down/bottom-up operation. These shades can be raised and lowered from the top or bottom as needed. This unique lifting system provides privacy and light control while still allowing you to view the outside. Speak with one of our representatives if you’re interested in seeing how this works in person.
