How to Handle Doors With Windows
Architecturally inviting and certainly light-enhancing, windows around or part of doors can mean a challenge for treating. Yet—just like their regular window counterparts—these windows should be treated to help protect the home from UV ray damage, outside temperatures, and privacy issues. At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we have some great solutions. Read on to learn more and be sure to speak with one of our consultants to see these options in person.
Sliding Glass Doors
Sliding glass doors work well with vertically oriented treatments, as long as the treatment is mounted to open the same direction as the door, so that it stacks on the opposite side of the main opening. Skyline® Gliding Window Panels offer a contemporary look and come in numerous fabrics and color options, so they’re a great option for sliders. Another good choice is Duette® Honeycomb Shades with the vertically oriented Vertiglide™ operating system. If you tend to use the sliding door a lot, shutters might be your best bet, because they’re extremely durable.
French or Patio Doors
With these doors, you have to be aware of the handles and how the treatment is mounted relative to how the door opens. One popular option for these doors is the NewStyle® Hybrid Shutter, which is available with cutouts for the handles. Another good choice is Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters, which are made of faux wood, so they can resist cracking, fading, warping, peeling, chipping, and discoloration, no matter how hot or humid the space is. Softer treatments can work well too—especially Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, which can lie flat behind the door handles, or roller shades, which lie flush against the glass.
A Front Door
Many front doors are designed with one or two side windows flanking them. In this case, privacy is often a concern, as well as UV damage and light control. You could consider cellular shades, blinds, shutters, and vertical sheers such as Luminette® Privacy Sheers. Other doors have specialty shape windows, such as arches, above them. For these windows, cellular shades do well, and if you add the Hunter Douglas EasyView® Arch, you can raise and lower your product instead of keeping it stationary.
