Client Story – Honeycomb Shades to the Rescue!

For the third year in a row, our AC went out during the heart of summer. Living in Phoenix we rely on our AC much of the year and suffer greatly when it goes out. You might be wondering why we haven’t replaced it when we’ve had major repairs over the past few years, well, we have a Home Warranty that prefers to repair. This year I noticed the AC wasn’t cooling and, trying to be proactive, had the AC technician come out to check on it. After an inspection I was informed it needed coolant, which was topped up. Six nights later, at 1am, I wake up as I’m hot…yep, AC totally out again. This was Wednesday. After another inspection that same day we were told they needed authorization from the Home Warranty Company to facilitate the repair.

You may be wondering why you’re reading about my AC woes on a Window Covering blog…well, when we moved into the house five years ago we put in Hunter Douglas Duette® Architella® Trielle™ Honeycomb Shades. I have thanked my lucky stars that we decided on them every time the AC has gone out. The Trielle shades have 3 honeycomb layers, giving 6 pockets to trap air between the window and the interior of the home. Because of this they rate that they’ll keep your home at 84 degrees if you measure 140 on the window itself.

Last year when the AC went out it was 118-120 outside temps. The inside of our home did not get above 84 degrees, really bringing home the insulation qualities of these shades. This year our home did not get above 82 degrees with the outside temperatures reaching around 110. I’m so thankful that the home was livable, albeit hot, during the time we were waiting on the new system to be installed.

These honeycomb shades give us help on our energy bills throughout the year too. We keep our AC set at 72 and during the winter at 68…yes, we like a cold house. Our AC runs 10 months of the year and our heating is turned on maybe twice during the year for 15 minutes to bring the heat up in the home (we only started doing this when we had a child!) Our home is 2700 square foot and is East/West facing (the worst!) with a two-story entry.
