Design Trends 2021
The pandemic changed a lot of things over the past year, which has, in turn, changed the way we look at our homes and home design. At Altra Home Décor here in the greater Phoenix area, we keep an eye on what’s trending so we can help our customers make choices as they design their homes. If you’d like a to learn a little about what’s new in interior design, read on, or be sure to contact one of our consultants about your personal situation.
Home Use Has Changed
Throughout the year, people worked from home, students learned from home, and entertainment streamed from home. Instead of being an after-work or after-school space, many people’s home became the everything space. And home design has adapted to that, from the way space can be used to the way it’s lit.
- Individual space. With many people often competing for workspace in the home, people are looking for ways to create separate spaces. For kids, a bay window can be a great work nook and a fun escape. Simply add external curtains to create a small room. To partition other areas of a room, use vertical solutions like Skyline® Gliding Window Panels, which can hang anywhere in a room to create a clear demarcation when needed and can be retracted when the room needs to be fully open.
- New technology needs. When the whole family uses the internet in ways they hadn’t before, bandwidth can get taxed. Which means that many people are looking to technology solutions to ensure that the internet doesn’t fail in any room of the home, including adding whole-home solutions to spread and boost the signal.
- Proper lighting. Having the right light on workspace is crucial, whether that’s the right lightbulb in the fixture or the right light control from the window. Furthermore, being inside without a break in routine can disrupt a body’s natural sense of time. One way to combat that is to ensure that natural lighting plays a key role during the day. Using PowerView® Motorization lets you program your window treatments to open and close based on local sunrise and sunset times or your daily activities. This can help your family reacclimate to natural day and night rhythms.
- Easy-to-clean textiles and materials. Even before the pandemic, antibacterial and easy-clean household materials were rising in popularity. For example, washable floor coverings are trending. And for other indoor items, great choices include natural fibers, which are inherently antibacterial, such as bamboo and oak, which actually prevents bacteria from growing.
