Color Trends
Although it’s a quick way to change the look and feel of a room, adding color can be daunting for many. At Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area, we know that many of our customers hesitate to add color because they think they might do it “wrong.” What’s nice about color, though, is that, ultimately, beauty is in the eye of the beholder—in other words, as long as you like the look of the color you’ve added to a room, that’s all that matters. And, if you add a color that you wind up disliking, you can always make a quick change. But if you’re still a little concerned about how to go about picking a color, perhaps it might help to know that each color carries significance. Read on to learn how the experts go about choosing trending colors each year, and defining the importance each one carries.
Pantone Color
In 1963, Pantone established the first color matching system, referred to as the Pantone Matching system or simply PMS system. It’s the standard by which most companies match color for exacting results. Those color experts are behind the Pantone Color Institute, which makes the predictions of trending colors. They review the latest from the auto industry, designer runways, and interior decorating showcases to identify trends and predict what will become a hit. “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” noted Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.
Past Color Trends
For an idea of what you might see in future years, check out what’s been declared “trending” in the past:
Marsala. Inspired by the wine of the same name, Marsala is an earthy shade with an organic nature. It is a “go to” color, whether is it the main focal point in the room or a simple accent piece.
Radiant Orchid. A striking combination of purple and pink, this saturated hue of is best used as an accent color against neutrals ranging from frosty whites to silvery greys.
Greenery. Reminiscent of the first day of spring, this yellow-green, snow pea color “speaks to what we call the ‘re’ words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, renew.”
Where to Put Color
You can add color to a room with décor, wall hangings, throw pillows, window fashions, and more. Add a little or a lot, and you’ll see a dramatic change to the look at feel. One thought might be to start with just a little so you have a chance to live into the color, in case you decide you don’t like it.
