2016 Forecasted Colors Have Arrived
In 2016, the trending forecasted colors, Rose Quartz and Serenity, will be making a calm and peaceful entrance. Everywhere we look and across all facets of interior home design, these two colors will replicate how we want to feel in the next two years. If you’re interested in adding new colors to your home, contact a trained consultant at Altra Home Décor serving the greater Phoenix area. We’ll be happy to help you determine what works for you.
Who Picks the Forecasted Colors of the Year and Why?
Have you ever wondered who is selecting the forecast colors and what the reasons are behind them? Twice a year, the Color Marketing Group (the color/trend forecasters and home décor and fashion designers) meet and decide what the colors will be for the next two years. Before they meet, they must study past trends and forecast future ones.
Factors That Influence Colors
Economy—When the economy is strong, popular color gets rich, deep, and vibrant. When it is weak, we see trends toward light colors and soft/safe colors.
- War—When the country is under attack, color leaves our homes and becomes safe, soft, and practically nonexistent. Taupe, grays, and whites are war colors.
- Events—When major events are forecasted, such as the Presidential election, the Olympics, and, yes, even the Star Wars movie, softer and safe colors are what we are drawn to.
Color is not a designer’s whim. Color trends come from where we are, where we want to go, and how people are feeling or not feeling. When we see younger criminals and attacks on countries and air travel, we are afraid and popular color becomes lighter, softer, and safer.
Why Do We Need Forecasted Colors?
All industries that produce a product for fashion, home furnishings, hospitality, and automotive follow forecasted trends. The forecasted colors start in fashion and then move to home furnishings, hospitality, and finally automotive. Each industry takes the forecasted color direction and adjusts it to their area and products. Warmer-climate colors may be lighter, and cooler-climate colors may be a bit darker than the actual forecasted color.
Pantone® Color Institute
Pantone is a universal color system that forecasters use to show the exact color that has been forecasted. Paint companies create the forecasted colors to actually put them on the walls. Here are the Pantone color numbers for each:
- Rose Quartz—Pantone color 13-1520
- Serenity—Pantone color 15-3919
Handling Trending Colors
The above colors are leading the way. If you don’t like them, wait a year, and new ones will be out. Remember trends are just that—passing fads!
